Vodafone plots Google maps for mobile phones
London, Feb 13: British telecom company Vodafone has said that it would provide Google maps services for its mobile phone customers with the assistance of the US Internet search giant.
"Vodafone and Google intend to develop a location-based version of Google maps for mobile to add to the growing portfolio of Internet-based services that are enhancing the mobile experience for Vodafone customers," it said in a statement yesterday.
The group added: "By integrating Google maps for mobile into its services, Vodafone intends to offer customers a powerful tool to help them find local services wherever they are.
In a separate announcement, Vodafone revealed yesterday a venture with US bank Citigroup which will allow mobile phone users to use international money transfer services. The two companies said that they hoped to tap into the global remittance market.
"Enabling money to be transferred internationally from person to person using mobile technology is set to greatly assist the flow of funds from migrant workers back to their families," they added.
Last week, Vodafone signed the first European deal with Myspace to allow its mobile phone subscribers to access the social networking website.
The tie-up is Myspace’s first mobile phone deal in Europe and will allow Vodafone customers to access their online journals on the move. The service will launch in Britain later this year.
